Can Invisalign Fix an Open Bite?

Just a few decades ago, the only option for fixing teeth misalignments and malocclusions was metallic braces. Understandably, a lot of people postponed getting orthodontic treatment in Charlotte as they were feeling too self-conscious about wearing a bunch of wires in their mouths.

Fortunately, things have changed and now you can opt for Invisalign to treat a wide array of orthodontic issues.

But while Invisalign can be effective for various types of misalignments, it cannot fix everything. So, it begs the question: can Invisalign fix an open bite?

Let’s find out!

Is Invisalign Effective in Treating an Open Bite?

Yes, in most cases, Invisalign can fix an open bite. Of course, an orthodontist will have to examine your teeth first and determine the severity of your problem.

An open bite happens when the top teeth do not touch the bottom teeth when your mouth is closed. This can be genetic or because of habits during childhood, such as tongue thrust, thumb sucking, or poor tongue posture.

An open bite has several consequences:

  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing
  • Difficulty when closing the mouth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Problems when talking
  • TMJ issues
  • Gum and bone loss

Considering the consequences an open bite has on a person’s oral health, it’s important to correct it as soon as possible.

How Can Invisalign Fix an Open Bite

Invisalign comes in the form of clear trays that cover your teeth. They are designed to apply enough pressure on your teeth so that they start moving into their correct position. The trays are changed periodically and the amount of pressure is slowly increased.

As opposed to traditional metal braces, Invisalign is barely visible since the trays are made of transparent material. Moreover, the trays can be removed for cleaning and when you are eating. However, you would have to wear them between 20 and 22 hours per day to ensure the treatment is effective.

The duration of the treatment will depend on how severe the open bite is and how long you keep the trays on during the day. The treatment can last from 4 months up to 18 months.
