Can Invisalign Trays Make My Gums Bleed? What You Should Know

If you’ve recently started Invisalign and your gums have been bleeding or you have been researching Charlotte Invisalign treatment and have heard others talking about this issue, you may be wondering if it’s normal. In this blog from SouthEnd Dentistry, we’ll give you all the answers you need.

Invisalign Can Make Your Gums Bleed In Some Cases

First, yes. Invisalign trays can make your gums bleed a little bit. This doesn’t happen to everyone, but it’s a relatively common issue. As your teeth move, the surrounding gums are moved and exposed, and this can cause gum sensitivity and bleeding for a few days when you switch to a new pair of aligners, particularly if you talk a lot while wearing them.

Want an analogy? Think about it like this. Your teeth are surrounded by little gum “turtlenecks.” As the teeth move, the “turtleneck” doesn’t immediately move with it, and it takes some time for the gum to accommodate the shift in your teeth and surround them in their new position.. During this time the gums may bleed easily and feel sensitive and tender.

However, this issue goes away within a few days in most people, as your aligners become more comfortable and your gums and teeth adjust to their new positions within your mouth. So if you see a little bit of bleeding when you switch to new aligners, don’t worry about it.

Tips For Dealing With Invisalign Gum Bleeding

If you are having issues with Invisalign gum bleeding, here are 3 steps that may help you feel more comfortable and deal with the issue.

  • Continue brushing gently but regularly – Even if your gums are tender and bleeding, you need to keep brushing regularly according to the dentist instructions. If you don’t, you could end up with gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, which will result in further issues with gum bleeding and other serious symptoms. Avoid brushing aggressively, too. Use a moderate amount of pressure, and don’t overbrush your gums, as this can make bleeding and tenderness worse.
  • Switch to a soft-bristled brush – You may want to consider buying a toothbrush with softer bristles. Bristle stiffness is typically advertised on the box of the toothbrush, so pick one that’s gentle or soft. This may help with discomfort and gum bleeding as you brush.
  • Rinse and clean your aligners thoroughly – This helps keep your mouth healthy, and also removes bacteria, plaque, saliva, and blood (if applicable) from your aligners to keep your smile beautiful.
  • Consider eating softer foods – If your teeth and gums are very tender when switching to a new set of aligners, try to eat soft foods like macaroni, yogurt, applesauce, and pudding for a few days. This will put less strain on your teeth and gums as they adjust to their new position in your mouth.
