How Are Dental Implants Placed?

Getting a dental implant in Charlotte involves many dental consultations, possibly multiple specialists, and one or more dental surgeries. It is a complex procedure that takes a relatively long time to go through all the healing phases, and its purpose is to replace a missing tooth with an artificial implant that will have the same function.

Before any surgery is performed, your dentist will create a treatment plan. It will be based on a thorough evaluation and advanced imaging techniques designed to offer the complete picture of the patient’s oral structure.

3D Imagery for Dental Implants

Until relatively recently, dental imaging was only possible through 2D scans of the mouth – x-rays. With the introduction of 3D imagery, procedures have become more precise and the scans much quicker.

The imaging technology we use at SouthEnd Dentistry is possible due to state-of-the-art medical devices and equipment. For our 3D scans, we use the Sirona 3D cone beam system, which has considerably shortened the scan duration. In just 14 seconds, we can take a complete scan of your mouth and jaw bone, which will show in great detail if you will need a bone graft, how the implant should be placed and what degree of damage you have in your teeth and bones.

Scans are taken throughout the treatment to make sure the bone graft has fused (in case you needed one), check what the placement of the implant should be, and verify that it’s fixed in the jaw bone correctly after healing. 3D scans with the German Sirona equipment are done very fast, at a lower cost compared to other methods, and with extremely accurate results.

How Is a Dental Implant Placed?

After the initial assessment, you might have to undergo procedures like having the damaged tooth removed and getting a bone graft. Once your jaw bone is clear of any remains of the missing tooth and it has enough tissue to support the implant, the post of the implant is placed.

The dentist will drill a hole in the jaw bone, at the angle and depth determined with the help of 3D scanning, and place the implant post. It will go deep into the jaw bone in order to support the artificial tooth. Next, you will wait for the implant to heal and to fuse with the bone tissue before getting the abutment and artificial tooth.
