How To Clean Your Invisalign Aligners – Tips & Advice To Keep Them Clean

Proper aligner care is essential when you’re undergoing Invisalign treatment. You’ll need to wear your aligners up to 20-22 hours per day throughout your treatment, so keeping them clean is essential for controlling bacteria buildup, preventing bad breath and a nasty taste in your mouth, and keeping your aligners clear and transparent.

But how should you clean your Invisalign aligners? Great question. Let’s look at a few top tips and steps you should take to clean your Invisalign aligners during your treatment at SouthEnd Dentistry.

Rinse & Brush Your Aligners With Unscented, Undyed Soap In The Morning

When you wake up in the morning, take out your aligners. Rinse them off with cool or lukewarm water, then apply a small amount of fragrance-free, undyed soap. Make sure to choose a soap that does not leave any residue and rinses away cleanly.

Then, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub your aligners. This will help loosen up any buildup and kill any bacteria that may have built up on your aligners during the night.

Rinse them off using cold or lukewarm water, and put your aligners back into your mouth. Don’t use hot water at any point during this process, since it could warp or damage your aligners. They are very sensitive to heat.

Clean Your Aligners Every Time You Brush Your Teeth Throughout The Day

You should be brushing your teeth after every meal when wearing Invisalign, which means you should also be cleaning your aligners every time you brush your teeth.

While it may not always be practical to brush your aligners with soap and clean them completely after each meal, you should at least rinse out your aligners after every meal.

Brushing and rinsing your mouth and your Invisalign aligners after every meal helps reduce the buildup of bacteria, and also prevents stains from forming on both your teeth and your aligners.

Soak Your Aligners Once Per Day In The Evening

You can use Invisalign crystals or any denture cleaner to “deep clean” your aligners at night. We recommend doing this after your final meal of the day, after you brush your teeth.

Invisalign crystals and denture cleaning products contain effervescent (bubbly) ingredients and surfactants (cleaning agents) that combine to clean and sanitize your aligners.

Just follow the instructions on the package to use your denture cleaner or Invisalign crystals. Most products require you to soak your aligners for about 15 minutes. Once this is done, just rinse them off, put them in, and head to bed.
