What Type of Pain is Normal After a Dental Implant?

If you’re missing one or more teeth, and are curious about what the recovery process for dental implants is like, you’ve come to the right place. SouthEnd Dentistry is here to answer all of your dental implant questions.

Pain And Discomfort Is Normal For At Least A Week

It is absolutely normal for patients to feel pain or discomfort for at least a week after receiving a dental implant. Although modern dental implant placements are minimally invasive, the procedure is still considered to be a major surgery, as it involves placing a metal implant into bone and its surrounding tissue. However, with advanced techniques, the healing process itself is quick and manageable with over-the-counter pain medications. After two weeks, the surgical site will be healed, and you can get back to your life!

What’s The Healing Process Like For Dental Implant Placements?

Like most surgical recoveries, the first couple days are the most difficult, but things get easier pretty quickly. Immediately following the procedure, you’ll likely feel nothing at all, as the numbing agent will still be in effect. After 3-4 hours, you may start to experience some pain or discomfort, but an over-the-counter pain medication should be sufficient to provide relief.

After 24 hours, you may start to notice some bruising, swelling, and tenderness around the site of the implant, and the site of the implant itself will probably be sensitive or tender for another 3-7 days. During this period, you’re going to want to stay away from hard, crunchy snacks, as well as foods that are hot, spicy, or acidic.

Once a week has gone by, you’ll likely be feeling much better, and the pain and discomfort will have subsided considerably. However, this is still a time to rest, and let your body heal and recuperate. After 2 weeks of taking it easy, you should be completely healed, and can resume your typical diet, exercise routine, and life as usual.

It’s Been Over 2 Weeks And I’m Still In Pain! What Should I Do?

Experiencing pain or discomfort after 2 weeks is rare. The site of the dental implant placement should be mostly healed during that time frame. Continued pain, swelling, or bleeding should be cause for concern, as it may indicate a potentially serious infection.
