Is It Normal To Have A Sore Throat After Wisdom Tooth Extractions?

If you’ve recently had your wisdom teeth extracted in South End, you may be experiencing discomfort and soreness in your throat after your procedure.

But is this normal? Should you expect to have a sore throat after your wisdom tooth extractions, or does this indicate that something is wrong?  Get all the details you need from SouthEnd Dentistry by scheduling now!

A Sore Throat Is Normal After A Wisdom Tooth Extraction

If your throat is sore after a recent wisdom tooth extraction, we’ve got good news. This is totally normal. Sore throats after wisdom teeth extractions are caused by sore and swollen muscles near the surgical area, and this is a common complication that happens in many patients who have one or more wisdom teeth extracted. Usually, your sore throat will go away within 3 days after your wisdom teeth are extracted.

You may also notice that your jaw feels sore and tender, or stiff. This is also caused by swollen jaw and facial muscles. Applying a moist hot pack to the jaw may help provide you with relief from your discomfort.

Rinsing With Salt Water Can Help With Your Sore Throat & Keep Your Mouth Clean

Want to treat your sore throat? It’s a good idea to rinse your mouth and gargle with a saline rinse. Just add ½ teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water, mix it in, and then gargle. This will help soothe your throat, and also kill bacteria in your mouth.

However, be very careful. If your tooth was extracted less than 24-48 hours ago, do not spit forcefully after gargling. Just let the liquid drip out of your mouth. If you spit forcefully, you could disturb your blood clot, causing a complication called “dry socket” that could impair proper healing and cause you a lot of pain and discomfort.

It’s Not Normal To Have A Sore Throat Or Serious Oral Pain For More Than A Few Days

If it’s been more than 3 days since your wisdom teeth were extracted and your throat still feels very sore and is not getting better, you may want to contact the team at SouthEnd Dentistry. This is not normal, so you should get help from our team.

The same is true of any oral pain and discomfort after your wisdom teeth are removed. Pain and discomfort should peak within 24-72 hours, and then begin to subside until your mouth is fully healed, which takes 1-2 weeks. If you feel a lot of pain that persists for more than 3-5 days, you may want to follow up with our dentist and the team at SouthEnd Dentistry.
